We all dream of winning the lottery. Even winning a one-week dream vacation is enticing enough for most of us to enter all kinds of sweepstakes and sign up for endless membership rewards programs. The lucky few who actually win are held up as being just like you which means you could be next.
Why are so many of us desperate to win a lottery of vacation? Well, I live in Winnipeg where our winters can be long and bitter and a week on the beach in Jamaica might help shorten the winter a little. But isn’t it really about escaping the life we have now? The lotteries advertise that with the millions from our win, we can live the life we want. And even the vacation, though it’s only for a week, means that we have seven days to do what we want. Money is no longer an issue, a road-block to living out our dreams.
In Coaching, one of the questions we might ask a client facing a road-block, or stuck in a life they don’t want and don’t know how to change it is: Imagine you’ve won the lottery and money was no-longer an issue. You could do whatever you want because you can now afford it. How would that change things? It is a tool to help the client to figure out what they really want in life.
The truth is that very few of us will ever win the lottery and money will always be an issue. Does that mean you can’t live the life you want? You absolutely can! It might take more time and work, but it is possible. It may mean being more of a risk taker, but it is achievable.
So let me ask you: Imagine you’ve won the lottery and money was no-longer an issue. You could do whatever you want because you can now afford it. How would you live your life? Is it really that unattainable?
